What is RCIA?
A journey towards full initiation into the Catholic Church. Each person comes to the table with different levels of knowledge about the faith but every participant is invited to go deeper with the Lord.
How do I sign up for RCIA?
To sign up, you can download the registration form from the website, fill it out and drop it off at the Pastoral Center. You can also pick up a registration form at the Pastoral Center, Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - noon, 1-4 p.m. or call 504-347-2203 and request a form from Fr. Francis.
When and where are the RCIA sessions held?
The RCIA sessions are held each Wednesday evening in the Church Meeting Room. We meet from 7:00 PM to approximately 8:15 PM. Sessions begin on Wednesday, August 17th.
What is the format of the sessions?
The sessions begin with Scripture Reflection, followed by a teaching, questions and answers, and small group discussion.
What is the cost for attending RCIA?
There is no cost to you to attend RCIA. Visitation of Our Lady provides all that is needed for the sessions.
May I bring my spouse/fiancé to the sessions?
Yes, you may. We encourage your spouse/fiancé to attend the sessions with you.
If I have been baptized in another church, do I need to be baptized again?
In most cases, you do not need to be baptized again. The Catholic Church requires that you were baptized with water, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We will need a copy of your baptismal certificate or other proof of baptism from the church where you were baptized. Proof of baptism may include a letter from the church, a copy of the membership record indicating that you were baptized, etc.
I was told I need a sponsor who is in good standing in the Catholic Church. What if I don’t know anyone who could do that?
The sponsor must be someone who has received all the Sacraments of Initiation and if they are married it must have been in accord with Church law. If you don’t think you know someone who can fill this role for you we can discuss this early on during the journey.
Do I have to attend every session?
RCIA is a building-block process and each session builds on the one before. However, we realize that there may be situations which would cause someone to miss. Therefore, absences are handled on a case-by-case basis. If you must miss a session, arrangements can be made to provide you with a copy of the notes from the session.
How many sessions can I miss?
Our desire is to have you attend all sessions. RCIA is certainly a place where you will learn about what the Catholic Church believes and teaches; however, it is much more than that. It is a process of getting to know Jesus Christ and growing together in community. RCIA is a process of conversion to a life with Christ. This process takes time and commitment on your part.
Who can I call for more information or clarification about RCIA at Visitation?
You may call Fr. Francis at 504-347-2203 or e-mail him at email@example.com with questions.
