We just celebrated the feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus is Latin for body. Christi is Latin for of Christ. So, among other things, Corpus Christi is Communion, the Body of Christ.
Do you eat pizza? I do. I’ll bet you do as well. It’s delicious, but it also puts weight on the hips and fat in our arteries. Our food becomes part of us. Well, same with Communion, the Bread of Life. One major exception: all the effects of Communion are fabulous. The Son of God literally becomes part of us. Isn’t that awesome! Yes, it’s awesome, but it imposes responsibility. The Son of God is part of us, looking and listening. So, if we watch porn, Jesus is seeing what we see. If we gossip, Jesus is listening to what we’re saying. Get the idea? There’s a lot we wouldn’t do if Jesus were standing beside us. He isn’t, but he is inside of us, watching and listening to all we do.
